Pet update

I can’t remember the last time I wrote a column about my pets. I love animals, I always have. When I was a kid, my mom said when I would play with my farm animal toys, I had to have two of each animal.

Somehow that continued into my adulthood because Ryan and I now have two cats and two dogs. We started off with our cat, Nordy, when we first moved to our house in Monticello. We then got our chocolate lab, Maple later that year.

That was going to be it for now as a far as pets go. Nordy and Maple became good buddies and two was enough for us.

Shortly after our wedding in October 2021, Ryan’s brother told us they needed to re-home their cats due to one of our nephew’s having asthma and allergies. So, we took in one of their cats, Blaze.

Blaze and Nordy are like brothers. They’re both very sweet cats. Blaze had never lived with a dog before, so Maple was a bit of a shock to him. Blaze is much more comfortable with Maple now, they aren’t best friends, but they get along!

Now, you’d think that would be enough new additions to our home in a short period of time; but like I said, I love animals! I have a soft spot in my heart for both dogs and cats.

This past summer, a co-worker of Ryan’s needed to re-home their puppy. They weren’t home enough to give her the attention puppies want and need. Ryan’s co-workers started sending pictures, and I couldn’t say no. Of course, we could give another pet a loving home.

That’s how we got Willow, she’s a labradoodle mix (we aren’t 100% sure on her breed). She’s a small to medium sized dog, so a bit smaller than Maple.

Willow loves Maple, and Maple loves Willow. I think when we first got Willow, Maple thought she was her baby, but now they act more like sisters. Willow is still a puppy, so we are still teaching her to be a good girl! She’s learning how to be calm and not so jumpy around the cats as well.

Just like when I was a kid, I made sure both our pets had friends; two of each. It’s chaos a lot of the time, but it’s worth it. It takes a lot of sweeping and vacuuming too, there is fur everywhere! Ryan and I really enjoy having cats and dogs, but I think we quickly learned our limit is four.

We love spending time with our pets and seeing their individual characteristics. They are all so funny and keep us entertained and busy!
