May is Military Appreciation Month

The month of May is Military Appreciation Month and is recognized to pay tribute to the members of the military. It celebrates those who have served or are currently serving. May holds multiple military related anniversaries and events including Memorial Day, Military Spouse Appreciation Day, and Armed Forces Day.

Military Appreciation Month honors service members of all military branches including Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, Space Force, and the National Guard.

In 1999 congress designated May as National Military Appreciation Month, and it has been celebrated ever since. During Military Appreciation Month, many organizations, and businesses honor those who have served by offering discounts. Some companies who have military discounts in May include Sleep Number, UFC Gyms, and Walgreen’s.

There are many ways to pay tribute and honor those who have served in our country’s military. Some ways to show your appreciation for our military can include the following:

•Donate to charities that support veterans

•Place U.S. Flags and/or flowers at Fort Snelling Cemetery

•Volunteer for a Veterans Cause

•Recognize local Veterans- family, friends, co-workers

•Send a care package to troops

•Support military-owned businesses

•Say thank you

There are two people that I would personally like to thank for their service and honor them. My late grandfather, Bill Hardy of Columbia Heights, who served as a Sergeant in the Korean War. He passed away in 2003. He was a wonderful grandfather, and a very caring person. I place flowers at his grave at Fort Snelling Cemetery each Memorial Day.

The second person I would like to thank is my father-in-law (my husband, Ryan’s stepfather) Alan Scott for his service in the United States Coast Guard. Alan served for over 30 years. He took Ryan and I on a tour of a U.S. Coast Guard Ship while we were in Florida a few years ago and has shared many fascinating stories of his time served.

I am extremely thankful for everyone who has served in our military. It is a blessing to have such brave people among us.
