Happy Earth Day - Friday, April 22

Earth Day is celebrated annually to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Earth Day has been recognized since April 22, 1970. It has been recognized globally since the 1990s, according to earthday.org over 190 countries celebrate Earth Day.

It is one of the most observed non-religious celebrations. It spreads awareness as well as inspires action. In 2020, Earth Day had been celebrated for 50 years.

Here are some activities you can do on Earth Day to celebrate this year:

•Clean up garbage at your local park- Throwing away garbage and recycling things like plastic at your local park helps with the environment and keeping our communities clean. If you are not sure if something is recyclable, look for the recycle symbol on the item. If there is no symbol on the item, there are resources online.

•Plant a tree- Many people plant trees on their property or at local parks to celebrate Earth Day. Trees are a very important part of our ecosystem.

•Conserve water- The average person unknowingly wastes up to 30 gallons of water every day. Much of this water is wasted by over-watering our grass or gardens. Here is a link for helpful watering tips: https://www.almanac.com/video/10-smart-watering-tips-healthy-garden.

•Build or put out a bird feeder- Respecting wildlife is a huge part of Earth Day. It’s also fun to watch beautiful birds visit your yard.

•Plant flowers for bees and butterflies- Certain flowers attract native bees and butterflies. Pollinators also play an essential role in our ecosystem.

•Make earth-friendly cleaning supplies- There are many at home items that can be used as eco-friendly cleaning supplies. Items such as vinegar and baking soda can be used to replace harsh chemicals. Please do your research before making any homemade cleaning solutions.

This year on Earth Day, my husband Ryan and I will be going on a walk around our neighborhood and picking up any garbage and making sure we correctly recycle. We may also plant some flowers in our garden, depending on the weather.

I hope everyone has a great Earth Day and a wonderful weekend.
