Ready, set, plunge!

Air temps hovering above 40 degrees may have felt nice to folks standing on the ice of Buffalo Lake at Sturges Park but did little to ease the chill of the hearty participants in the annual Polar Plunge fundraising event held on Saturday, March 8.

The exhilarating event saw 296 participants brave icy-cold waters to support Special Olympics Minnesota. The fundraiser brought community members, local organizations, and school sports teams together, united by a common cause to promote inclusion and athletic opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Over its nine-year history, the Buffalo Plunge has raised more than $560,000 for Special Olympics Minnesota, showcasing the community’s steadfast commitment to the cause. This year’s event brought in over $60,000.

Participants, affectionately known as “Plungers,” collected pledges from friends, family, colleagues, along with area businesses and organizations, before taking a daring leap into the frigid waters of Buffalo Lake.

The Polar Plunge embodies the spirit of community and philanthropy. Funds raised benefit over 8,200 Special Olympics athletes across Minnesota, providing them with opportunities to train, compete, and develop essential life skills. The event also fosters camaraderie among participants and raises awareness about the importance of inclusion and support for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

The Buffalo Polar Plunge exemplifies the power of community action in making a positive impact. By coming together for this unique event, residents of Buffalo and the surrounding area continue to champion inclusivity and support for Special Olympics athletes across Minnesota.

A special thanks to the Buffalo Chamber of Commerce, Buffalo Police Department, and Wright County Sheriff’s Office for helping to make a fun, safe, and memorable event.
