Polar Plunge at Buffalo Lake April 24

Name something more Minnesotan than running into an icy cold lake for fun.

Over 120 locals signed up for Buffalo’s  annual Polar Plunge, hosted at Sturges Park and Buffalo Lake on Saturday, April 24. The event raised over $30,000 for Special Olympics Minnesota; the cold weather was no match for the enthusiasm and determination of the participants.

Plungers usually jump from a platform into the lake, but due to COVID restrictions, this year’s plunge slightly shifted gears. Participants were grouped into smaller “pods” and ran into the lake and back out.

Despite the changes, the event was successful in raising funds for Special Olympics Minnesota, and offered a chance for the community to cheer each other on.

Members of the Buffalo PD, Annandale PD, Buffalo Rotary, and more took the plunge to support the organization that is “creating a world that accepts and welcomes every single person, regardless of ability or disability.”

According to the official Polar Plunge website, the plunge is the biggest fundraiser for Special Olympics Minnesota, and all funds raised “provide year-round training and services to over 8,100 athletes across the state.”

Fundraising is required for participants, with many forming plunge groups and receiving financial support from family and friends to take the icy dip in the lake.

This year, the plunge was offered both virtually and in-person, allowing more people to participate.
