Transplant your seedlings

UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA EXTENSION - www.extension.umn.edu

Your seedlings should have their second leaves (or more!) and be ready for transplanting into larger pots. The plants will remain in these pots until they are ready to plant outside in your garden, containers, raised bed, community garden plot, etc.

  • Wash transplant pots with hot, soapy water and rinse well.
  • Moisten the new and unused potting mix with water so it is as damp as a wrung-out sponge.
  • Fill the pots about half full.
  • Gently remove seedlings from cells without damaging roots; a wood shim or spatula works well for raising them.
  • Set the seedling in the pot and fill in with more soil, pressing gently around the plant.
  • Place in a sunny window or under a grow light.
  • Water with a dilute fertilizer solution (about half-strength).
  • Be sure the pot drains well.
