County fair season is the perfect time to show off your garden’s best and maybe earn a ribbon or two along the way. Whether you’re a seasoned exhibitor or trying it out for the first time, these field-tested tips will help your floral entries stand tall.

Start with stellar blooms

• Pick flowers at their peak—not too tight, not too faded.
• Look for bright color, strong shape, and healthy foliage.
• Cut early in the morning with sharp tools to avoid crushed stems, which struggle to take up water.
• Place blooms in water immediately and let them hydrate before arranging.
• Remove leaves below the waterline and groom gently (tidy, not fussy).

Clean vases count

Wash containers with hot, soapy water, rinse well, and fill with fresh water plus floral preservative. It helps keep bacteria at bay and your flowers fresher longer.
