John Lindberg, 85
John Bernt Lindberg, age 85, went home to be with Jesus, August 9, 2022, after a short battle with cancer.
John was born to Arthur and Evelyn (Sorenson) Lindberg, at home in rural Gully, MN, on July 31, 1937. John and Carol (Pazarena) were united in marriage November 25, 1961, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Bagley, MN. Three sons were born to this union.
John worked in the Iron Mines and later as a heavy equipment mechanic for Tri State Drilling and Park Construction. His work took him to many states, including Utah for a year and Wyoming for a-year-and-a-half. John enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and was meticulous about his lawn. He loved his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
The Sunday before he died, John said he wanted to go and be with Jesus. As weak as he was, he tried to sing, “How Great Thou Art.”
John made the decision to donate his body for research at the University of Minnesota Bequest Program.
A celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 10, 2022, at Lakeview Community Church (25538 370th Avenue, Hillman, MN 56338).
John is survived by his wife, Carol Jane; sons, David (Mary), of Stillwater, Timothy (Karen), of Hernando, FL, and Trent, of Fargo, ND; grandchildren, Christina (Josh), Zachary, Levi, Justin, Chase, Katie, Maggie, Eleanor, and Mollie; great-grandchildren, Axel, A’Briauanna, Annabel, and Eva; sisters, Vonnie Snobeck, of Detroit Lakes, Loren (Ken) Hockert, of Thief River Falls, MN, Vicki (Will) Dekkers, of Erskine, MN, and Beverly (David) Mountain, of Fall Creek, WI; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Marvin Masteller, 65
Marvin Lee Masteller, age 65, of Buffalo, Minnesota, passed away August 12, 2022.
He was born February 5, 1957, in St. Cloud, Minnesota, to Vern and Ruth (Hickman) Masteller. Marvin attended Litchfield High School, where he graduated with the class of 1975.
It was there he met his future wife, Cynthia (Cindy) Staunton. The high school sweethearts were joined in marriage in 1977 in Litchfield, Minnesota. Marvin had briefly attended the University of Minnesota before enlisting in the United States Air Force as a medical service specialist. He was stationed in Minot, North Dakota, and proudly served until his honorable discharge in August of 1981. He then completed his education, earning a Bachelor’s degree in accounting from St. Cloud State University. He was employed with various companies for accounting and sales for many years.
Marvin was known to be a caring person who went out of his way to include everyone. He always made people feel welcome, greeting friends and family with that familiar twinkle in his eye. He had an easy-going personality and could carry on fun conversations with his stories (and a few “punny” jokes sprinkled in here and there). Marvin loved spending time outdoors, especially being out on the lake fishing. One of his favorite fishing spots was up north on Lake Vermilion. He loved all things nature: bird watching, tending the vegetables in his garden, and sitting on the dock. Marvin liked to play cards, work on crossword puzzles, and cook his famous homemade pizzas.
The best was yet to come when he became a Dad and Grandpa; the light in his life came from his children and grandchildren. He was so proud of them all, and he always placed their needs before his. He was blessed to have made many loving memories with his family, and his legacy will be carried on in each of them.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Marvin is survived by his loving wife, Cindy; children, Jason Michael (Angi) Masteller and Jennifer Anne (Tyler) Reiss; grandchildren, Kaylee, Jace, Aviana Masteller and Emma, Sawyer, Charlie Reiss; siblings, Marilyn Meline, Phyllis Holtz, Lola (Mike) Hendrickson, Steve (Sharon) Masteller, Charlotte (Rich) Sullivan, and Laurie Smude; mother-in-law, Darlene Vick; and many other relatives and friends.
Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, August 27, 2022, at 11:00 A.M. with visitation beginning at 9:30 A.M. at the Church of St. Francis Xavier in Buffalo, Minnesota. Interment with military honors will follow at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Buffalo, Minnesota.
Roger Patch Sr., 97
Roger W. Patch, Sr., of Wayzata and Long Lake, MN; and of Sanibel and Fort Myers, FL, passed away in Buffalo, MN, on August 14, 2022, at the age of 97 years, eight months.
He was born to parents Frederick M. Patch and Lydia W. Patch in the Village of Wayzata on December 6, 1924, Roger graduated from Wayzata High School and served in the U.S. Army until 1946. He married Pauline (Polly) Kuss Patch, also from Wayzata, on June 4, 1949.
He studied Architecture at the University of Minnesota, then achieved his Masters of Architecture in 1950 at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA. Roger and Polly built their original (much photographed) family home, which still stands, in Long Lake. They had six children, Darcy, Dana, Fred, Polly Ann, John, and Roger Jr. (deceased).
Roger and Don Erickson founded the firm Patch Erickson Madson Architects, Inc. in 1955 in Wayzata, Minnesota. Shortly thereafter moved to offices in Minneapolis where they practiced architecture for 26 years. Their designs can be found all across the Mid-West. The firm specialized in commercial architecture that touched the humanity of the Mid-West, including schools, hospitals, nursing homes and retirement communities, civic centers, fire stations, banks, stores, and religious buildings.
Roger was the architect chosen to design the original Target Stores. Polly was sure he got the contract because of her riding with “The Long Lake Hounds.” Roger knew it was the design he did for the Wayzata City Hall that was appreciated for its unique rounded entry. Retiring from the firm in 1981, Roger and Polly moved to Sanibel, Florida, where they enjoyed Florida island life, occasional real estate, and consulting work in retirement. Eventually moving to Fort Myers, Roger was a loving caregiver to Polly until she passed away in 2018. Polly was a charter member of the Minnetonka Center for the Arts, an accomplished artist, real estate broker, horsewoman, and boat captain. Roger was her best audience and frame creator. As a mentor to many, Roger was loving and kind, dedicated to family, honorable, reliable, responsible, persistent, and hard-working.
Roger is survived by his sister, Lucia Patch Adams; and five of his children, Darcy Haislet (Tim), Dana Thomas, Fred Patch (Mary), Polly Johnson (Ed), John Patch (Diane).
A private family gathering for Roger will be held later this fall. Interment will be in the Summit Park Cemetery, Wayzata, MN.

Veronica Varner, 88
Veronica Josephine (Goeb) Varner, age 88, of Buffalo, passed away Sunday, August 14, 2022.
Veronica was born on April 12, 1934, in Buffalo, Minnesota, to Edward and Mary (Bucher) Goeb. She was joined in marriage to Duane (Bud) Varner on April 7, 1956.
She had a generous and caring heart; she often spent time at the Community Center making bed mats for the homeless. She would drive to the local food shelters and pick up items to deliver for those in need, and always made sure those who were less fortunate received assistance. She loved to work on craft projects, had excellent sewing skills, and was talented in embroidery.
Veronica is survived by her son, Rick (Gennifer) Varner; granddaughter, Caramia Varner; sisters, Marlene Dupont, Deloria Weege, Marie (Ron) Dehn; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Duane (Bud) Varner; granddaughter, Angel Varner; parents, Edward and Mary Goeb; brothers, Joseph, Aloysius, and Louie; sister, Elizabeth; brothers-in-law, Adrian Dupont, Roger Weege, Larry Kauppi; and sister-in-law, Jeanette Goeb.
Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, August 24, 2022, at 11:00 A.M. with visitation beginning at 10:00 A.M. at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Buffalo, MN.
