Cynthia Barthel, 64

Cynthia Marie “Cindy” Barthel, age 64, of St. Michael, passed away on Saturday, August 13, 2022, at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids.

She was born on December 1, 1957, in Buffalo, the daughter of Harlan and Betty (Gordon) Schirmers.

Cindy graduated from Buffalo High School in 1975. On May 6, 1978, Cynthia M. Schirmers and Michael J. Barthel were joined in holy marriage at St. Michael Catholic Church in St. Michael, MN. God blessed their marriage with a son, Adam. She loved animals especially kittens and puppies. Cindy also enjoyed listening to music, watching classic T.V. and movies. She was a good cook and baker.

She is survived by her loving husband of forty-four years, Michael J. Barthel; a son, Adam (Nancy) Barthel, of Albertville; granddaughters, Lucy, Aubrey, Alice and Nora; her parents, Harlan and Betty Schirmers, of Annandale; siblings, Debbie Schirmers and Brian Schirmers, both of Hanover, Vicky (Marlin) Stimpson, of Elk River, and Tammy Koch, of Clear Lake; many other relatives and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial for “Cindy” Barthel will be held on Saturday, August 20, 2022, at 11:00 A.M. at The St. Michael Catholic Church in St. Michael. Father Brian Park will be the Celebrant.

A visitation will be held on Friday, August 19, from 4-8 P.M. at The Peterson Chapel St. Michael-Albertville Funeral Home. A Prayer service will be held at 7:00 P.M. Further visitation on Saturday morning, August 20, one hour prior to mass at the church.

Casket Bearers will be Adam Barthel, Brian Schirmers, Dillon Ogren, Greg Pollock, Marlin Stimpson, and Matt Stimpson.

George Brummer, 100

George J. Brummer Sr., age 100, of Montrose passed away August 9, 2022.

He was born in Minneapolis on March 6, 1922, the son of Michael and Afra Brummer. On August 30, 1941, George Brummer and Marilyn Linner were joined in holy marriage at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Golden Valley, MN. God blessed their marriage with ten children.

Marilyn preceded her husband in death on March 17, 2018, following 76 years of marriage. George formerly engaged in farming and was fond of buying and selling.  He enjoyed all animals, fish frys and trips to the Dairy Queen. George especially loved to kid and tease. He also had more “sweethearts” than anyone could ever count.

George is survived by children, George (Kim) Brummer Jr., Michael (Delores) Brummer, Walter “Wally” (Linda) Brummer, Martin “Marty” (Mary Ann) Brummer, Thomas (Barbara) Brummer, Gary (Rita) Brummer and Diane (Chuck) Von Ruden; a daughter-in-law, Candice Monson; 29 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his loving wife, George was preceded in death by his parents; his sons, Paul and James Brummer; grandsons, Michael Brummer and Jared Brummer; and by six brothers and sisters. 

Funeral services for George J. Brummer Sr. were held on Wednesday, August 17, 2022, at 10:00 A.M. at The Peterson Chapel in Buffalo. Father Martin Shallbetter officiated. Interment followed at Kreidler Cemetery-rural Montrose. A visitation was held Tuesday, August 16, at The Peterson Chapel in Buffalo from 4-8 P.M. Further visitation was one hour prior to service on Wednesday, August 17, at the funeral home.

Bruce Douglas, 76

Bruce Rodger Douglas

Aug. 14, 1945 – Aug. 13, 2022

Bruce passed away peacefully at age 76 in his Buffalo, MN, home.

Bruce was preceded in death by parents, David Stanley Douglas and Anne Janosco Douglas. 

He is survived by his wife, Barbara J.; and children, Scott Anderson; Darci Dvorak (Terry) and children, Eric, Lauren, and her family; Richard Anderson and daughters, Madelyn and Hannah and her family; Jennifer Hauge and children, Grace, Nickolas and Claire. He is also survived by siblings, Nancy Rodgers (Leo d.), son, Lionel Rodgers (Crystal) and their children, Joshua and Leah; Roberta D. Gale; Scott D. Douglas (LuAnne) and children, Aaron and Elisabeth and their families;  and Lowell A. Douglas.  He is warmly remembered by extended family, friends and colleagues.

Bruce was graduated from Buffalo (MN) High School (1963), Carleton College (1967) and the UMN Law School.  He served in the US Navy JAG Corps. He practiced law in Buffalo, MN, and was a Judge in the MN Tenth Judicial District. Bruce was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and will be remembered as being loving, generous, strong, supportive, and down to earth. He enjoyed time spent with his family, being outdoors - especially hunting and fishing.

Per his request there will be no public service. A family ceremony will be held at Kreidler Cemetery.

John Kittel, 82

John E. Kittel, age 82, of Roger, formerly of Monticello, passed away on August 11, 2022.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John M. and Martha (Fredrick) Kittel; wife, Lois Jeanne Kittel; and sisters, Evie Schluter, Millie Searcy, and Marlys Aupperle.

John is survived by his children, Todd (Amy) Kittel, Jeff (Karrie) Kittel, and Kelly (Troy) Ische; grandchildren, Ashlee Kittel, Konnor Kittel, Kayla Ische, Gabrielle Kittel, Emma Ische, and Tyler Kittel; and other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to service at church on Tuesday, August 23, 2022, at Community United Methodist Church, 9225 Jason Avenue NE, Monticello, MN. Interment Riverside Cemetery, Monticello, MN.

Craig Probst, 67

Craig A. Probst, age 67, of Montrose, Minnesota passed away on Wednesday, August 10, 2022, at his residence surrounded by the love and care of his family.

Memorial Services will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 19, 2022, at Dingmann Funeral Care Chapel, Maple Lake, with Rev. Culynn Curtis officiating. Visitation will be held 4-7 p.m. on Thursday and one hour prior to the service on Friday, both at the funeral chapel. The service will be live-streamed on the funeral home website.

Craig Allen Probst was born on January 21, 1955, in Watertown, Minnesota, to George and Elaine (Matter) Probst. Craig grew up in Waverly and attended Howard Lake-Waverly High School. On June 2, 1973, Craig was united in marriage to Mary Ann Yager at Bethlehem United Church of Christ in Maple Lake. They made their home in Waverly for a short time before moving to Montrose in 1977; they were blessed with three children. For over 27 years, Craig worked for Mammoth Incorporated in Chaska and most recently for the Howard Lake Waverly Winsted School District providing maintenance. Craig enjoyed being outdoors fishing and camping. He also liked to watch westerns. He was very fond of driving his 1994 Mustang GT. Above all, Craig treasured the time he was able to spend with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Craig is survived by his wife, Mary Probst, of Montrose; children, Mike (Beth) Probst, of Buffalo, Melissa (Chris) Thorston, of Springfield and Daniel (Shelby) Probst, of Montrose; seven adoring grandchildren, Ali, Tristan, Brenden, McKenzie, Emma, Carter, and Parker; siblings, Judi Salonek, of Montrose, and Tom (Vicki) Probst, of Buffalo; sister-in-law, Mary Probst, of Waverly; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Craig was preceded in death by his parents, George and Elaine Probst; and brothers, Ken and Gary Probst.

Joanne Zander, 85

Joanne A. Zander, age 85, of Maple Lake, died Sunday, August 14, 2022, at the Allina Health Buffalo Hospital.

Funeral Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 22, 2022, at Bethlehem United Church of Christ in Maple Lake with Pastor Marc Well Nagel officiating. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Evangelical United Church of Christ Cemetery in Albion Township. Visitation will be held from 3-6 p.m. on Sunday at Dingmann Funeral Care Chapel in Maple Lake and one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church. A prayer service will be held 6:00 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral chapel. The funeral service will be livestreamed on the funeral home website.

Joanne Audrey Carlson was born July 16, 1937, in Grafton, ND, to Berent and Johanna (Thompson) Carlson. She grew up in Dahlen, ND, graduating with the Class of 1955 from Dahlen High School. After high school, she worked in Minneapolis as a phone operator. On April 11, 1959, Joanne was united in marriage to James Herbert Zander at Salem English Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. They moved to Albion Township near Maple Lake to raise their family. In addition to helping Jim at the farm, Joanne worked numerous places in the area, including as a waitress at Ellis’ Steak House and Liberties Restaurant, both in Annandale, as a cleaner at Buffalo Hospital, and as a receptionist at Lakedale Telephone in Annandale, Setterberg Jewelers in Buffalo and the Wright County Courthouse in Buffalo.

Joanne was an active member at Bethlehem United Church of Christ in Maple Lake. She served on the Women’s Guild, sang in the choir, and was a Sunday school teacher. Joanne loved to bring family and friends together at her table through her cooking and baking; she was known for her angel food cakes. She also enjoyed gardening at her home and singing for events at area churches. Her care and love for others will be greatly missed by her family and her community.

She is survived by her children, Barry (Susie) Zander, of Maple Lake, Noel (Karla) Zander, of Buffalo, Valerie Zander, of Buffalo, and Mary Mero Zander, of Crosby; grandchildren, Ivy (Eric) Wendt, of Monticello, Dustin (Alysa) Zander, of Maple Lake, Erica Zander, of Hopkins, and Zachary Parker, of Maple Lake; great-grandchildren, Hurley, Hailey, Hayz, Stella, Simon, Lenna, and Michael; brother, Ronnie Carlson (Ila Loken), of Bullhead, AZ; sister, Delores Wermerskirchen, of Monticello; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Berent and Johanna Carlson; husband, James Zander; son, Lynn John Zander; and brothers, Carroll, Urban, Sheldon “Buddy”, Leslie, Dorman and Dennis Carlson.
