Motorcycles account for a small percentage of the total number of vehicles on the road. Despite that, a National Safety Council analysis of data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates that motorcyclists accounted for 14 percent of all traffic fatalities, 17 percent of all occupant fatalities and 3 percent of all occupant injuries in 2021. More than 5,900 motorcyclist deaths occurred in 2021, a figure that far surpassed any other year between 2007 and 2021. And it wasn’t just fatal injuries that rose, as the NSC reports that nonfatal injuries among motorcyclists increased by 5 percent between 2020 and 2021. Recognition of these figures is important, and it’s equally notable that 83 percent of motorcyclist fatalities occurred in good weather, and a little more than half (53 percent) involved two vehicles.
