Promise Park, all abilities playground now open

The Buffalo Covenant Church held a dedication to the new Promise Park on Sunday, August 7. Many church members and members of the community attended to hear about the new playground and enjoy the amenities. There was also free ice cream provided by What’s the Scoop?.

This event was held in conjunction with Disability Awareness Sunday worship services. Church Director of Special Needs Tonya Sands and Executive Director Dave Macalena were both involved in the project.

“This is our gift to the community,” Macalena shared. The park is for anyone in the community and beyond to enjoy. The park project began at the church’s annual Christmas Love Project and a goal was set to raise $125,000 for an all-abilities playground. Within six weeks, $650,000 was raised.

“It came together quickly. Things fell into place, and God provided every step of the way,” Macalena said. Construction began in April, and the park was finished this summer for everyone to enjoy.

There are currently porta-potties on site, but there are plans for permanent bathrooms to be added at a later date. “We want people to be able to enjoy the park for long periods of time,” Macalena disclosed.

“We want to share the gospel with visitors and make everyone feel welcome,” Sands stated. “We hope someday schools will take fieldtrips and visit,” she continued.

So far, the park has had been used by community members, Functional Industries, and children ministries. The park is handicap accessible and has sensory-related equipment, having something for children of all abilities to enjoy.

“Seeing kids of all abilities play side by side is amazing,” Sands said. Families have already been enjoying the playground, and on dedication day on August 7, the park was packed.

“We hope everyone comes to enjoy the park, come and fellowship” Macalena announced. At the park there is a welcome sign and dedication to the Buffalo community. “Friendships are being fostered at the park,” Sands articulated.

Promise Park is open from dawn until dusk, and everyone is welcome to enjoy the new playground.
