Ask Extension: Amaryllis care

UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA EXTENSION - www.extension.umn.edu

Red and white lily-like flowers amidst other plants by a large window.

Amaryllis grow well as houseplants in a sunny window.

Q: I forgot about my amaryllis bulb that I brought in from my deck in October. I set the potted plant in a closet in our basement and the other day I noticed it has a bud! What should I do? Also, when should I bring it outside in the spring?

A: Amaryllis are great houseplants! Set your plant in the sink and water it, allowing excess water to drain. Then set it on a saucer in a sunny window. You’ll see the bulb grow almost daily.

After it blooms, continue watering it and enjoy the long, paddle-like leaves it produces.

When our night temperatures are consistently around 55° F,  set it outside in the shade. Gradually move it into more sun until it is in full sun (6+ hours per day).
